Plant in a loose well-draining soil. Direct sowing in raised beds are best, but can also be started indoors early in trays, but care has to be taken to not disturb the root while transplanting. Plant in early spring once the soil can be worked, even several weeks before the last expected frost. Keep seeds moist until germination, which usually occurs within a couple of weeks. Seeds should be planted about 1/4 in deep, ideally spaced a couple inches apart, but you may have to do some thinning regardless. You can feel the carrot near the top to see if it has reached the expected diameter, but the only true way to know if it’s ready is to pick it.
