Climbing evergreen perennial native to the Mediterranean and southern Europe, Madder has been used for well over 2000 years, with uses being traced back before the common era. Mostly used as a dye, Madder root can be cultivated to make vibrant reds thanks to the anthraquinone pigment “alizarin”.
Madder, is an evergreen plant with star like leaves whorling around the central stem, and due to tiny hooks at the leaves and stems Madder has the ability to climb a fences or trellis with ease. The roots are harvested for dye making usually 2 to 3 years after planting.

Growing Instructions: Sow seed in fall or spring. Sow 1/2 inch deep, then keep evenly moist and in the sun until germination (about 3 weeks).
Madder Prefers full sun, but can still do well in part sun. Fast draining soil works best, as Madder is drought tolerant and can go weeks without any extra water once the plant has been established.
