Name: Purple Podded Pole Bean

An American heirloom from the Ozarks, this pole bean is grown for its clusters of purple pods with soft pinkish beans inside. Eaten young they are tender raw and are great sautéed or steamed up to 6”. When allowed to grow to full size the pods are tough but the beans, if shucked are tasty soaked and cooked. The plants are very heat tolerant and productive and are best sowed in successive crops for a longer season. Let the pods completely dry out when harvesting for seed saving. For best storage, keep beans in cool dry place until the moisture has left the bean. Discard beans that sprouted in pods

Growing Instructions:
Inoculate and soak with beneficial bacteria for quicker and healthier germination. Direct sow beans 1-2” deep, 2” apart with 24” between rows in early spring through summer. Keep moist. Germination occurs in inoculated and soaked beans in 4-7 days, 10-14 otherwise. Thin to 12” apart when plants are 3-4” tall. Needs well draining loamy soil and consistent moisture throughout life
